Meet the Maker
I am an emerging artist based in Sydney with a primarily focus on ceramics. My work is concerned with the material world and how this relates to spirituality and my experience of faith. My pieces draw from the Australian landscape, attempting to capture the colours and textures of my hometown, Warialda. I am also concerned with the handmade object, seeking to embrace the individuality of each piece I make through their imperfections and highlighting the marks of the maker.
My Design Process
Concept Development
Inspired by a combination of faith and the Australian landscape, my core collection derives its colours and textures from creation in my hometown, Warialda. Spending time in these surroundings has compelled me to design pieces for homes that draw from this environment.
Prototyping
Here I begin to experiment and bring my ideas to life. Using Australian clays, natural metal oxides and my glaze recipe book, I make test pieces to see how I can best replicate the colour and texture that inspires my work. The result is a series of prototypes, of which I use to define and refine my final pieces.
Design Execution
Once I know what techniques I need to use to realise my ideas, I create one final test round. I usually keep the first set for myself, allowing me to test the pieces (and it’s a perk of the job). Finally, I make my pieces, document them and bring them online and to markets for you to take home!
